Position Overview
We are seeking a Composite Engineer to lead the design, development, and validation of advanced composite products. This mid-level role is ideal for developing engineers looking to grow their expertise in advanced materials and manufacturing processes. This role will focus on product innovation, tooling design, and manufacturing process development to deliver high-performance, cost-effective, and manufacturable solutions. The Engineer will collaborate with the Director of Engineering and cross-functional teams to support new product launches, continuous improvement, and lifecycle management of composite components.
Key Responsibilities
- Product Design & Development
- Lead the design and engineering of composite components and assemblies using CAD/CAE tools.
- Define technical specifications, performance requirements, and validation methods for composite products.
- Ensure product designs align with manufacturability, cost, and performance targets.
- Define and document technical specifications and design requirements, considering materials, finishes, and manufacturing processes.
- Maintain accurate design records, CAD files, and advanced material specifications.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to develop prototypes and conduct testing of design concepts.
- Tooling Design & Development
- Design, develop, and validate composite tooling (molds, fixtures, and jigs) for production and prototype use.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and suppliers to ensure tooling is robust, cost-efficient, and capable of consistent quality.
- Optimize tooling for production scalability, cycle time reduction, and process repeatability.
- Process Engineering
- Develop, document, and refine composite manufacturing processes (layup, infusion, autoclave curing, RTM, compression molding, out-of-autoclave, etc.).
- Implement Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for process and quality issues.
- Material & Manufacturing Expertise
- Select appropriate composite materials (carbon fiber, fiberglass, resin systems, cores, adhesives) based on performance, durability, and cost.
- Validate new materials and processes in collaboration with suppliers and R&D.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and customer specifications.
- Testing & Validation
- Plan and oversee structural, thermal, and environmental testing.
- Analyze test results and implement design or process improvements.
- Support certification, qualification, and regulatory requirements.
- Project Leadership & Collaboration
- Manage engineering activities from concept through production launch.
- Lead cross-functional collaboration with operations, quality, supply chain, and customers.
- Mentor junior engineers in product, tooling, and process development.
- Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Identify and implement cost, weight, and performance improvements.
- Develop innovative solutions for manufacturing challenges.
- Contribute to intellectual property development in product and process technology.
Qualifications
- Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Aerospace Engineering, or related field required.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience
- 4+ years of engineering experience in composite product design, tooling, and process development.
- Hands-on experience in designing and building composite tooling and fixtures.
- Strong background in CAD (CATIA, NX, or SolidWorks) and FEA tools (Abaqus, Ansys, or similar).
- Hands-on experience with prototyping, 3D modeling, and material testing.
- Strong creativity, problem-solving, and technical skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Detail-oriented, with a focus on quality, precision, and manufacturability.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
The pay range for this role is:95,000 - 110,000 USD per year(Neoniq USA LLC)
