About the Opportunity
A large, publicly traded organization operating in mission-critical construction and engineering
environments is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join its San Jose-based engineering
team.
This is a senior technical and leadership role responsible for leading mechanical design efforts from
project kickoff through construction, while mentoring engineers and ensuring the highest standards of
design quality. The position works closely with clients, architects, and internal teams on complex,
high-visibility projects.
Position Overview
The Principal Mechanical Engineer serves as a technical authority and project leader, guiding HVAC,
plumbing, and mechanical systems design across new construction and retrofit projects. This role
balances hands-on engineering with leadership, client engagement, and quality control, ensuring
projects are delivered efficiently, sustainably, and in alignment with client goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical system design for new construction and retrofit projects
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and oversight to engineering teams
- Manage projects from concept through construction, ensuring quality, budget, and schedule alignment
- Design and review HVAC, plumbing, and central plant systems
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and best practices
- Drive energy-efficient and sustainable design solutions
- Serve as a primary client-facing technical lead, coordinating with owners, architects, and contractors
- Review and approve design documents to ensure technical accuracy and consistency
- Support construction administration and resolve field-related design issues
Required Experience & Qualifications
- 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience (consulting environment preferred)
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and Professional Engineer (PE) required; California PE strongly preferred
- Proven experience leading HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems design across all project phases
- Strong background in central plants, MEP systems, and energy-efficient design
- Advanced proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD
- Strong knowledge of applicable mechanical codes, standards, and sustainable design principles
- Excellent communication, leadership, and client management skills
